The Premier League has launched a new educational initiative called “Footy Phonics” to support children’s reading skills. This free resource is designed for primary schools in England and Wales and is part of the Premier League Primary Stars education programme.

Key features of Footy Phonics:

  • Target Age Group: Designed for children aged 5-7 years old
  • Focus: Helps children explore letters and sounds through football-related activities
  • Content: Includes classroom planners, worksheets, and football-themed activities
  • Availability: Free for all primary schools in England and Wales

How was Footy Phonics developed?

Footy Phonics was developed in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust, teachers, and subject-specialist experts. The resource aims to make learning phonics more engaging by leveraging children’s passion for football. Early implementation at schools like Moorlands Primary in West Bromwich has shown positive results, with teachers noting improvements in students’ learning both in and out of the classroom.

Footy Phonics is part of the broader Premier League Primary Stars programme, launched in 2017. This initiative uses football’s appeal to help children develop essential life skills and stay active. The programme offers over 650 free resources for primary schools, covering various curriculum subjects for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 students.
