Sport Wales has announced that Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, a staple in the sports sector, has been appointed chair of Sport Wales. Finishing her tenure at ukactive in June 2022, she will take over from Lawrence Conway, who is stepping down as chair after five years in the role.

Tanni is well known for her experience in the field of competitive sport, having started wheelchair racing at the tender age of 15. She went on to become a multi-gold medal winner in Paralympic sport, competing for Wales in five Paralympic Games and 3 Commonwealth Games, winning a massive 16 medals.

After a trying time for the sector, Tanni will be coming full circle, having joined the Sport Wales and Elite Cymru boards while she was still a competing athlete. She added:

“I am both delighted and excited by this chance to support people to become active and to lead healthy lifestyles. I firmly believe that had I not been born and raised in Wales, I would not have experienced the opportunities that came my way.”
