Branded PE kits may become a thing of the past in the UK

The document titled “Is this the end of branded school PE kits?” discusses the potential changes to school uniform policies in England, particularly focusing on physical education (PE) kits.

The UK government aims to limit the number of branded items that schools require, which is expected to reduce costs for parents. This initiative follows a commitment made in the King’s Speech and is part of broader efforts to make school uniforms more affordable.

A survey by the Children’s Society indicates that two-thirds of secondary school parents find uniforms too expensive, with some needing to purchase multiple branded items. However, there are concerns that reducing branded PE kits might lead to decreased participation in sports among students.

The availability of second-hand uniforms is mentioned as a resource for families struggling with costs. However, there is a noted decline in donations of branded PE kits as schools alter their policies, which could exacerbate financial challenges for some families.

The Department for Education is reviewing evidence to finalise the number of branded items schools can require. Stakeholders, including school leaders and uniform exchange programmes, stress the need for careful consideration to avoid unintended consequences from policy changes.
