Recent reports show that leisure, sports, and gym facilities have maintained low rates of COVID-19. The report entitled ‘Safe and Essential’ examines contraction rates for the public and ukactive members. The data set is compiled from those who have used fitness and leisure facilities through different phases of the pandemic.
In more than 240 million visits from July 2020 through to February 2022, there were just over 2,500 cases of COVID-19. The overall rate was just over 1 case per 100,000 visits. The number is low considering the upward trends in group exercise and fitness during the pandemic.
Sustained campaigns by ukactive and its members to keep facilities open during the pandemic have been essential. Gym and leisure operators were well-placed to capture real-time data alongside maintaining the safety regulations required to keep cases low on contraction rates.
The results show that fitness facilities across the country remain marginally safe to attend. With the growing impacts of the pandemic still to be seen, it’s essential that the activities and fitness sectors continue to play a supportive role in the nation’s health and resilience.
