The CIMSPA Workforce Insight Report 2023 reveals that the sport and physical activity workforce in the UK is less diverse than the overall UK workforce as of 2022. This report, released in autumn 2023, provides an analysis of the sector’s shape, size, and scale following the pandemic, as well as insights into its future development needs.

Key demographic findings from the report include:

  • Gender representation: The sector has a higher proportion of male workers (54%) compared to the UK-wide workforce (48%).
  • Age distribution: The sport and physical activity workforce is younger on average, with 39% of workers under 34 years old, compared to 33% in the wider UK workforce.
  • Ethnic diversity: The sector shows less ethnic diversity, with 87% of workers identifying as white, compared to 85% in the overall UK workforce.
  • Disability representation: Only 9% of the sport and physical activity workforce reports having a disability, compared to 15% in the wider UK workforce.
  • Sexual orientation: The sector has a slightly higher proportion of workers identifying as LGBTQ+ (5%) compared to the UK-wide workforce (4%).

The report highlights the need for the sport and physical activity sector to improve its diversity and representation across various demographic categories to better reflect the UK population it serves.
