To mark the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the Sport for Development Coalition has launched the ‘Open Goal’ campaign. Launched on the 6th of April, the campaign is aimed at supporting those national policies that focus on ‘Levelling Up’ communities. The Levelling Up agenda focuses on deep-seated inequalities revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The campaign represents “an opportunity to recognise the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities…across the globe.” The central aim is to draw attention to the role of the sport, fitness, and activities sector in national recovery.

The Coalition has called for funding committed to the sector to be ringfenced. The funding would be used for social prescribing in health, social care, and the criminal justice system. With the multiple returns on investment that can be facilitated by engagement, the campaign will highlight the importance of continuing sport-based interventions.

The Levelling Up agenda released earlier this year has outlined 12 missions to which Coalition members are already contributing.
