The Commonwealth Games Legacy Project has brought water skills safety to primary schools across Birmingham and the Black Country. They have been teaching dryside water safety skills in PE lessons alongside the customary pool-based sessions for years 5 and 6.
The sessions are designed to target those pupils who are less likely to reach the general school swimming standard. Many of these children had been unable to stand in water without panicking, and after the sessions, they could complete 15-25m swimming independently.
The extra sessions were funded by Sport England and delivered by Swim England.
