With an impending General Election looming, the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement is the last important fiscal event of 2023. Sport & Recreation Alliance Policy Manager Max Nicholls has looked at the potential impact and support available to the sector.

These include:

  • Increased help for self-employed people (e.g. coaches and instructors) with reductions to Class 2 and Class 4 National Insurance worth more than £200
  • Business rates relief for eligible businesses totalling 75% for those companies operating large facilities like clubs or stadia
  • Plant and machinery investment giving sport and recreation organisations subject to corporation tax 25p off their tax bill for every £1 they invest
  • The expansion of VAT relief has been proposed for energy-saving materials and reforms for organisations that undertake them

However, little has been said about ensuring longer-term strategies for delivering a healthy resilient workforce. For the sector, this is essential for the nation to fulfil its economic potential in leaner times.
