The ukactive organisation is piloting the “Ask for Angela” safety campaign in 11 fitness and leisure centres in southwest London. The campaign, which has previously been successful in the hospitality sector, allows people who feel unsafe or uncomfortable to discreetly ask staff for help by using the code word “Angela”.
The pilot is part of a broader initiative called the “Safer Spaces to Move Project“, aimed at improving the safe and welcoming environment in fitness and leisure facilities. It is a collaborative effort by ukactive, This Girl Can, the Safer Business Network, the Metropolitan Police Service, and the Mayor of London.
The goal is to ensure safety and help members feel confident and comfortable reporting any incidents of inappropriate behaviour to staff discreetly. Broadly, this initiative is part of a wider drive to ensure the fitness and leisure sector’s workforce is equipped to manage such incidents.
