Sport Wales has announced significant investments in improving sports facilities across Wales to capitalise on Olympic enthusiasm.
Around £800,000 has been invested in ‘court collaboration’ projects to create better facilities for basketball, netball, and tennis. Locations were selected based on demand indicated by the School Sport Survey 2022. Run-down or unused courts are being transformed with new surfaces, line markings, hoops, and nets.
Over £1 million has been allocated to upgrade or create new artificial pitches for rugby, football, and hockey. Four projects have shared this funding in the last 12 months. The investments aim to make sports more accessible and meet the demand for casual play spaces.
Sport Wales is committed to working with partners to ensure everyone inspired by Welsh athletes competing can enjoy sports that appeal to them. Another round of court collaboration funding will be invested this financial year, with expressions of interest invited from local authorities in early September. Applications for this year’s pitch collaboration fund have closed, with successful projects to be announced later in the year.
These investments demonstrate Sport Wales’ commitment to improving sports facilities and making various Olympic sports more accessible to communities across Wales.
