The latest Active Lives Adult Survey data shows a modest increase in the number of active adults, indicating the sport, recreation and physical activity sector’s recovery from COVID-19. However, the data reveals growing inequalities in activity levels across different income groups, genders, ethnicities, and disabilities.
The sector is calling for stronger measures to reduce these inequalities to unlock the potential of sport, recreation, and physical activity to improve the nation’s health and wellbeing.
Proposed reforms include dedicated support for public facilities, tax reforms, a national strategy for PE and school sport, ring-fenced investment in sport-based programs, greater access to levelling up funding, and emphasis on the sector’s role in reducing preventable diseases.
The National Sector Partners Group (NSPG), a coalition of leading organisations in the sector, argues that harnessing the sector’s potential is integral to delivering key government priorities like levelling up, driving economic growth, achieving net zero, and supporting the NHS. The group urges the government to work collaboratively with the sector to effect transformative change and make the UK one of the most active nations in Europe.
