Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign launched a new initiative called #LetsLiftTheCurfew which aims to raise awareness of safety concerns that prevent women from being active outdoors during winter. The campaign kickstarted with a 5k run in central London, accompanied by a mobile screen displaying quotes from women about their fears of getting active outdoors after dark.
Research found that almost half (48%) of women prefer not to exercise outside after dark, and 60% worry about the risk of sexual harassment or intimidation. The initiative calls for a safer and more inclusive experience for all women when being active outdoors after sunset.
