A new report titled “Diversity in Sport Governance” reveals increased representation of disabled individuals and those from culturally or ethnically diverse backgrounds on sports organisation boards. The study, commissioned by Sport England and UK Sport and conducted by Perrett Laver, analysed 128 funded organisations.
Compared to the 2020 report, board representation of culturally or ethnically diverse individuals rose from 7.9% to 15.1%, while representation of those with disabilities or long-term health conditions increased from 13.0% to 16.1%.
There has also been a marginal increase in those reporting as non-binary (0.3% compared to 0.1%) and those preferring not to say (1.2% compared to 0.1%). For senior leadership teams, data gathered for the first time shows 54.0% are male and 44.4% are female.
While progress has been made in some areas, the report also highlights ongoing challenges:
- A slight decrease in the number of women holding board positions over the past four years
- Senior leadership teams are still far from reflecting the diversity of UK society
