According to a survey by Sustrans, the majority (56%) of people in the UK want to see a shift in investment from road-building schemes to funding options for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.

The survey is the largest independent study of active travel in the UK. It also found that 50% of people want to walk more, 43% want to cycle more, and a third want to use public transport more. In contrast, only 15% want to drive more, while 24% want to drive less.

Sustrans is calling on all political parties in this election year to recognise this public demand and prioritise active travel and public transport. It demonstrates a commitment to achieving the UK’s Net Zero targets, including the current government’s goal of having 50% of urban journeys walked or cycled within the next six years.

Xavier Brice, Chief Executive of Sustrans, emphasised that the evidence shows people want the choice to walk, cycle, and use public transport. He stated that moving forward is not about forcing people out of their cars, but about making it easy for people to travel in their preferred way, improving public health, the economy, and the environment.
