This summer, ukactive and Nike launched the third annual Open Doors Programme, aimed at getting more children and young people active during the summer, owing to two successful rounds the years before.
This year’s focus was on girl’s participation alongside underserved communities. It was hosted in three London borough primary schools and a secondary school in Feltham. Delivery partners included Team Get Involved, Effective Transitions, and JUMPLDN.
This model forms part of ukactive’s Schools as Community Hubs policy, which calls on the government to unlock school facilities. Nearly 40% of community sport facilities in England are locked behind school gates and are therefore inaccessible during school holidays.
Research shows that children and young people can lose up to 74% of their cardiorespiratory fitness in the summer holidays. Underserved communities are amongst the worst affected, with girls’ participation levels falling well below boys.
