Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, responded to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s welfare reform speech on mental health and economic inactivity. While acknowledging the importance of addressing mental health for productivity, Edwards criticized Sunak’s focus on determining mental health status rather than improving national health and wellbeing.

He urged the government to utilise sectors like physical activity to support mental health, citing ukactive’s research showing 78% joined gyms to improve mental wellbeing.

Edwards stated physical activity prevents ill health and helps people return to workHe believes that the government should unlock the potential of the physical activity sector as outlined in the Get Active strategy to reduce economic inactivity. He called for a bold plan involving solutions like the sector rather than just systemic changes.
