In a survey conducted by ukactive and Beano Brain, new insights into children’s physical activity have revealed their habits and preferences. The survey found that:
- 40% of children aged 7-14 want to be more physically active than they currently are
- Only 26% of children prefer screen time over physical activity
- 53% of children use screens for more than 3 hours daily outside of school, with 24% of 11–14-year-olds spending over 6 hours a day on devices
- 35% of children do 30 minutes or less of physical activity daily outside of school
When it came to physical activity, children had the following preferences:
- 63% enjoy being active with friends or familiar people
- 49% prefer wearing their own choice of clothes
- 46% value a friendly and supportive coach or teacher
- 43% prefer activities that are not too serious
- 30% prefer non-competitive physical activities
ukactive has launched a ‘Next Generation’ strategy aiming to get one million more children active by 2030. The strategy focuses on strengthening the physical activity sector’s offer for children and young people. It aims to drive consumer insights, evolve industry standards, and refresh guidance for supporting services and programs.
