The Global Wellness Institute’s recent report reveals that the physical activity market is the largest segment of the UK’s wellness economy. According to the study, this market was valued at £39.3 billion in 2022, accounting for 29% of the total wellness economy in the country.
The physical activity sector in the UK experienced a 15% growth from 2020 to 2022, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The UK ranks fifth globally in terms of physical activity market size, following the United States, China, Japan, and Germany.
The report highlights various subsectors within the physical activity market:
- Fitness (£5.8 billion)
- Sporting goods (£13.5 billion)
- Sports and recreation (£20 billion)
The Global Wellness Institute forecasts that the UK’s physical activity market will reach £46.3 billion by 2027, with an average annual growth rate of 3.3%.
The overall wellness economy in the UK was valued at £134 billion in 2022, positioning it as the fourth-largest wellness market globally. This figure represents a 15.4% growth from 2020 to 2022, surpassing the global average growth rate of 14% during the same period.
