In a move that could support activity and fitness across the country, a new pilot is set to benefit 11 local authorities in the UK. The pilot will bring 12.7 million in multi-year funding for walking groups, cycle training, and free bike loans to be prescribed by GPs.

Fitness and activity have a wide range of benefits, from mental health and wellbeing support to muscle recuperation. The trials will be aimed at caring for the UK’s mental and physical health using preventative medicine in the community.

Infrastructure upgrades are expected as a part of the programme to help people with any safety concerns they may have about walking and cycling in their local communities.

The 11 local authority areas that will trial social prescriptions are:

  • Bath and North East Somerset
  • Bradford
  • Cornwall
  • Cumbria
  • Doncaster
  • Gateshead
  • Leeds
  • Nottingham
  • Plymouth
  • Suffolk
  • Staffordshire

To find out more about the pilot, visit your local authority website or see here.
