The Youth Sport Trust has released its annual PE and School Sport report, revealing a crisis in young people’s wellbeing.

The report has highlighted several key findings:

  • Children’s happiness is at an all-time low, with their overall wellbeing in crisis.
  • Physically active children demonstrate better mental, physical, and social wellbeing, as well as improved self-belief and mental toughness.
  • Digital distractions are contributing to decreased physical activity, with 70% of parents believing their children are less active as a result.
  • Schools are facing challenges in providing physical activity opportunities due to declining numbers of PE teachers and reduced PE hours.
  • Inequalities are deepening, particularly affecting girls and children from lower-income households.

The charity is urging the government to take immediate action by guaranteeing every child access to 60 active minutes of PE, sport and play daily. This call to action comes as National Sports Week took place from the 17th – 23rd June, with more than 4000 schools registering to take part.
